Women have always been the primary victims of war. Women lose their husbands, their fathers, their sons in combat. Women often have to flee from the only homes they have ever known. Women are often the refugees from conflict and sometimes, more frequently in today’s warfare, victims. Women are often left with the responsibility, alone, of raising the children.

El Salvador is a war-torn country where male-female birth ratio is the typical 1:1, but by adulthood 1 in 10 males are dead relative to females. El Salvador’s wars are also characterized by the use of child soldiers, a form of violent slavery that almost exclusively targets boys.

It is beyond creepy to claim that women suffer more by being the relatives of men who die than the men who actually die. It elevates one class of human beings so high above another that their status as spectators of suffering takes priority over those who actually experience the suffering.
